The Lewis Jewel

Did you Know?

What is a Masonic Lewis?

A Lewis is the son of a Mason who becomes a member of the Craft.  In England the term "Lewis" is a symbol of strength, a man's strength being represented in his son. In our jurisdiction the Lewis is the son of a Freemason. The Lewis Jewel may be worn by a Freemason, if at the time of his Initiation, his father was a Freemason in good standing (the initiate of a deceased father–in good standing at the time of his demise–would also qualify). The Lewis Jewel consists of two bars connected by chains – The upper bar contains the name of the father and date of his Initiation. The lower bar, the name of the son and date of his Initiation.

Do you know how an operative Lewis was used?

The lewis is a device that allows an operative freemason to raise large stones to the required height and set them in place with safety and precision.  The device itself is remarkably simple and very effective.
