History of Defenders Lodge No. 590

A  Brief History of our Lodge:

The years immediately following the close of the First World War witnessed a mark increase in Masonic activity, resulting from the wish of returned servicemen to seek admission to the Craft. This wish  was probably motivated, in part by seeing how Masons behaved during war service. The desire to join was quite evident in the Ottawa region, where also many active Masons  had come to reside because of a change in occupation.

The active Masons found themselves far from their mother lodges and tried to affiate with the lodges in the Ottawa District. Their applications, together with those of the new candidates, inudated the existing lodges, which led to several new lodges being institued. Of these Defenders Lodge was the second last lodge to be formed.

A proposal was made by a group of brethern of whom many were employed in the then Department of Soldiers Civil Re-establishment, to establish a Craft Lodge in Ottawa, with membership to be restricted to returned servicemen. Which resulted in the Lodge being formed and Consituted on October 23, 1922 and so Numbered  No. 590 as numbers ending in 0 was reserved for Military Lodges.  As time marches on , membership has been extended to both Military and none Military.

We at Defenders Lodge take great pride in our history and founding Military Members.
