The Words of Freemasons

Freemasonry teaches moral lessons and self-knowledge

"Freemasonry teaches moral lessons and self-knowledge.  Here Masons take their stand.  From this point, we as Freemasons start our journey, our quest for self-knowledge, a path leading us to the inmost parts of ourselves, our own psyche and our own soul".

W.Bro. Julian Rees, Kirby Lodge No. 2818, United Grand Lodge of England

Ordo ab chao

"Ordo ab Chao - order out of the mental and moral chaos amidst the crushing pressures and stresses of modern daily life.  Such, my brother is the nature of the human concept of morality.  Do right if you can; if questionable do not do it; and above all do no harm.  No longer talk about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, be such!!"

Morality and Freemasonry by W.Bro. Dr. K. Jyothindra Kumar, Grand Lodge of India

To thine own self be true

"See that you conduct yourselves, out of lodge as in lodge, good men and masons"; and remember those immortal words of Polonius giving advice to his son Laertes as he departs from Denmark, on his return to France, in Shakespeare’s greatest play, Hamlet: "This above all, to thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man". Almost the whole masonic ethos can be found in those few words — so easy to remember, so difficult to put into practice."

R.W.Bro. Michael W. Walker, Grand Secrectary, Grand Lodge of Ireland

Is it anachronistic to hold fast to old-fashioned values in a modern society

"A wise observer of the human condition has said that "we are not aging, but evolving."  It is the journey. not the destination that is important.  We have now crossed over the threshold into the second decade of the twenty-first century.  Throughout our long history, originating in 'time immemorial,' men have voluntarily joined a lodge to work together seeking opportunities to improve themselves, to serve and care for their fellows, and to build a better world community based on tolerance, respect, and understanding."

M.W.Bro. Raymond S.J. Daniels, Grand Master Grand Lodge A.F.&A.M. of Canada in the Province of Ontario
